IEP and 504 Binders – A Free Tool for Minnesota Families

Advocating for your child in the school system can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. The IEP & 504 Binder, created by Decoding Dyslexia MN Board members, is a free, practical tool designed to help parents of school-age children in Minnesota navigate the IEP and 504 process with confidence.

This binder is packed with easy-to-use resources to guide you through every step of your child’s educational journey, including:

  • Covers & Organization Tools – Front Cover, Inside Cover, Table of Contents, Binder Setup, and Organization Notes
  • Staying Organized – Notes pages for meetings, phone calls, and team contacts
  • Getting Started – Flowchart, IEP vs. 504 comparison, 504 templates, IEP process overview, Anatomy of an IEP, Tips & Red Flags
  • Finding Answers – Guidance on screenings, evaluations, and understanding test scores
  • Developing a Plan – Information on services, accommodations, potential supports, and SMART goals
  • Reference Materials – Minnesota rules and statutes, federal guidance, dyslexia discussions, terminology, acronyms, and helpful websites

Binders are available in English and Spanish and should be brought to all IEP or 504 meetings. Families may request one free hard copy per household (shipped at no charge) by emailing keab@decodingdyslexiamn.org
